For everyone claiming that Moffat chose Capaldi because he was “the best for the role”
Capaldi was THE ONLY PERSON HE CONSIDERED FOR THE ROLE.
He didn’t even let anyone else audition.
It wasn’t like a diverse group of actors of all races, ethnicities, genders, and talents showed up and were all carefully considered and Capaldi was simply the most choice of the lot.
He was the only one Moffat even looked at for the role.

...And..?
ReplyDeleteMoffat was the guy in charge of choosing. Whether he rolled people out and made them audition or not, it was his choice about who was best for the role.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is saying that they want a shot as show runner.

A television actors' audition is as much 'look at my previous work' as anything else. SM could examine any white, green, yellow, black , pink, ginger as he liked, and no doubt did while Matt was on the job, in preparation for the change.
So making any criticism of Moffat's decisions implies that one wants to be producer of Doctor Who?
DeleteWell, yeah.
DeleteBecause criticism of his choices and methods implies that the critic's choices are 'better'.
I'm all for criticism. Just getting really weary of the 'me too' comments from people 'demanding' black or female doctors.
(Yes I am aware that strays from this precise subject)
Its not an election.
And frankly, if we'd had a woman doctor, the internet would have exploded and a lot of people who had taken a stance on the subject would be *really* wishing they had shut up, one year later.
Moffat is in charge. While he is in charge, things get done his way. Thats what in charge means.
Yeah, seriously, it's Moffat's show, he can pick who he wants. It's not an election or a building project. Nice to know there isn't the sort of studio interference that wrecks so many movies.
ReplyDeleteSo when people talk about Capaldi being best for the role, what they really mean is the person Moffat wanted for the role.
DeleteYes, exactamundo. He gets to pick. Anyway, he's lying about not considering anyone else.
ReplyDeleteHypothetical situation:
ReplyDeleteSo, you're a TV producer. You get Doctor Who. They tell you that you can incorporate the character of Klein, from the BF audios. I, as your boss, say, "Well, you're the producer - Who do you think is BEST FOR THE ROLE?"
I didn't ask you "who do you want to audition" - I asked you who is best suited for the role. And knowing your appreciation of Klein, I doubt you've never given it thought. I bet you'd have one or two names, though if you're a savvy producer you'll have ONE name for me. Moffat knew someone was best for the role. He got him. (And a superb choice, I must say - If you've any doubt, please check his other work outside of DW and Torchwood.)
You are often spot on in your criticism of Moffat, but here he's simply making decisions that he's supposed to make. He's run the show for some time and written for the character even longer. He's certainly qualified to make this call in this case; it's his job.
Thanks for your thoughts and the vote of confidence.
DeleteMoffat works for the BBC who are committed to racial and sexual quality. In considering possible actors for that job, he has an obligation to consider talent from ethnic minorities and the opposite sex when coming to a conclusion on 'who is best for the role.'
