Something I never thought of: the scarf Tom's doctor wears is useful for many things, except for preventing bat bites on the neck. They needed at least a brief minimal image so we can immediately connect with the Doctor's reaction. Watch it again and see.

All the mental clues, and the audio clue...

hermits
thumping heart
type 40 records
galactic legends
drained corpses
tanks and pipes of blood
etc...

...were known by the doctor, yet he had never *seen* a great vampire until seeing the scanner. Tom's doctor was the first time lord to see such a thing in, what, a billion years? A billenium of legends, hidden records, ghost stories, and the end of the world, show on his face as he turns away from the scanner. Its my favorite Tom Baker moment, or Any Doctor moment. Yea

My guess is: the shorter and fuzzier the image, the better, so we focus on Baker's reaction which says more than a longer, high quality image could ever do.

Thanks. Love this whopisode. I always thought 'the wasting' was a euphemism for the three vampires feeding on the peasants; presumably not all the blood ended up in the spaceship fuel tanks! It also seemed to me to be pretty clear that the peasants and guards and so on are descended from the original crew of the Hydrax - there's no-one else living on the planet, the tower and the village are identified as the only structures (Terrance appeared to have forgotten this when he wrote Blood Harvest). With the possible exception of Terradon it's never definitely said that there are any planets with native civilisations in E-Space. Is there a particular reason why you think the villagers can't possibly be descended from the Hydrax crew? Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
